Mixed News for Museums as Congressional “Super Committee” Fails
The failure of the Congressional Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (the “Super Committee”) signaled a temporary reprieve from the proposed limitation in the deductibility of charitable gifts, which was being seriously considered as the negotiations broke down. The bad news is that massive across-the-board spending cuts will automatically go into effect in 2013 unless Congress takes action before then. We’ll continue monitoring any proposals on these issues.

U.S. Senate Honors Accredited Zoos and Aquariums
On Nov. 8, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved S.Res. 132, a resolution recognizing the nation’s accredited zoos and aquariums. The resolution, introduced by Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), recognizes the vital economic, educational and conservation roles of zoos and aquariums and urges their continued support. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums and its members worked with Senator Nelson and 28 bipartisan co-sponsors to secure passage of this resolution.
