Robin Kang
An exhibition at Gallery X, 280 South Columbus Drive room 113
August 31 – September 21, 2010

Mimicking industrial production through repetition and pattern creation, Robin Kang immerses herself in the process and ideology of specialized labor. Informed by the instability of a global economy, Kang examines the current condition of what were once the booming industrial sites of the American northeast. Photography and video document her interest in industrial change and technology’s impact on exchange.

Kang patterns dilapidated factories whose remains conjure imagery of Western ghost towns and the Native American craft culture replaced by outsourcing and cheaper labor. Her mirroring techniques allude to the multifaceted cultural reflection within interactive systems. Visual rhythms in Seismic Industry result in a symbiosis of artwork and document that is evocative of energy wave illustrations, ancient megalithic configurations, and video game graphics.
